“The constitution—it’s only keepers, the people”. So said George Washington and how true it is! How can we “keep” the Constitution, that sacred document that preserves our liberty, if we don’t know it? How can this “marked generation” that we are raising up defend it if they don’t understand it and have its words and meanings implanted deeply in their hearts?
Co-op School—Add Zip to Your Homeschool!
Want to make homeschooling easier!? Try creating a Co-op School!
Co-op school is simply a few homeschool families getting together to do school together once a week. My family enjoys it tremendously. Every Friday, we meet with a few other families from 9:30 to noon. Some years, our group has grown to many families. All you need are some other children near your children’s ages for friendships to form.
Indispensable Math Facts
Math facts! Those stalwart, foundational facts that carry us through our lives, making us able compute things in our head at the grocery store and figure out the cost of a tank of gas. We need them! Our kids need them! Let’s give it our best to teach them to our kids, making their experiences with math much easier.
Funny Putty
Here’s a fun science recipe to make:
- 2 cups white glue (regular, not school glue)
- 2 teaspoons Borax
- Water
Mix the borax with 1/3 cup water, dissolving well. In another bowl, mix the glue and 3/4 cup water. You can also add a few drops of food coloring. Stir well and add in the borax/water mixture. Amazingly, the putty will clot. Knead together, leaving any excess water that forms in the bowl.
Homeschool with a Baby
Homeschool with a baby? Yes, it presents about the same likelihood as taking a family vacation to Mars, teaching your dog to talk, or abolishing Santa Claus. Depending on the temperament of your baby, and the number of non-reading children who need instructions read to them during homeschool— you are in for one unique experience. This is tough stuff!
Times Tables Fun
Mastering the math facts is one of the journeys and victories of childhood. The sooner they are learned to the “automatic-response” stage, the better! All math that follows requires the basic addition and mulitiplication facts. One mathematics professor at the university said that most of the problems his Calculus students misssed on tests were due to math fact errors, not because they didn’t know the formulas!
