Poor Writing

Photoxpress_44768981-300x199Question:

I could use some insights on how to get my kids to turn out better quality book reports and just writing in general.  My oldest is in 6th grade and the next child is in 3rd grade, and here we’ve done grammar and writing year after year and yet so many times in journal writing or book reports I don’t see what they’re learning taking hold in everyday usage.  I use Rod and Staff English books and I also switched to Winston Grammar for my 6th grader this past year, but like I said, when it comes to everyday usage they’re not getting it.  Help!  [Read more…]

The Constitution—It’s Only Keepers, the People

DCP_4912 (2)“The constitution—it’s only keepers, the people”. So said George Washington and how true it is! How can we “keep” the Constitution, that sacred document that preserves our liberty, if we don’t know it? How can this “marked generation” that we are raising up defend it if they don’t understand it and have its words and meanings implanted deeply in their hearts?

Here’s a fun science recipe to make:

Times Tables Fun

Mastering the math facts is one of the journeys and victories of childhood. The sooner they are learned to the “automatic-response” stage, the better! All math that follows requires the basic addition and mulitiplication facts. One mathematics professor at the university said that most of the problems his Calculus students misssed on tests were due to math fact errors, not because they didn’t know the formulas!

Plasma Gloop! Science Fun

hth4There are 3 states of matter, right?  Solid, liquid and gas.

Well, there is theoretically another state of matter, a 4th state known as “plasma”.  Our plasma concoction is solid enough to break, but it flows like a liquid. Treat your kids to this fun science experiment! It is so simple, but it will have them oohing and aahing! Assemble it outside on the picnic table and save yourself some cleanup. [Read more…]

Art: What to Teach?

monlisa

Fine arts are often the first to be cut from public school curriculum when the budget gets tight. We want our children to be cultured! Art is a big part of cultural refinement, but do we start? Basically, 1) doing art and 2) enjoying and learning from art that was done exceptionally well over the history of our world.

Make a Time Line

Screen Shot 2015-05-15 at 11.08.04 PMOne of the best things we did was create a time line that lived on our family room (school room) wall.  It amazed me how often I found myself—and the kids—looking up at it pensively, studying it, commenting on it, and drawing relationship conclusions: do you know that Jesus lived at the same time as Confucius?
