{"id":1574,"date":"2014-12-02T04:07:35","date_gmt":"2014-12-02T11:07:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/happyhomeschooling.com\/?p=1574"},"modified":"2015-07-06T16:53:07","modified_gmt":"2015-07-06T22:53:07","slug":"time-line","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/happyhomeschooling.com\/site\/time-line\/","title":{"rendered":"Make a Time Line"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lovetolearn.net\/US-History-Time-Line\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-7069\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/happyhomeschooling.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Screen-Shot-2015-05-15-at-11.08.04-PM.png?resize=203%2C289&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2015-05-15 at 11.08.04 PM\" width=\"203\" height=\"289\" \/><\/a>One of the <strong>best things we did was create a time line<\/strong> that lived on our family room (school room) wall. \u00a0It amazed me how often I found myself\u2014and the kids\u2014looking up at it pensively,\u00a0studying it, commenting on it, and drawing relationship conclusions: <em>do you know that Jesus lived at the same time as Confucius?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Some people put their time line in a binder, but I don&#8217;t think they get enough use.\u00a0 I like mine where the children&#8217;s\u00a0 eyes wander to it frequently. It gives us a <strong>centerpiece focus<\/strong> to frame our history studies. We know where we are in time, it is no longer vague.<\/p>\n<p>To make our time line, we just used a long roll of printer&#8217;s paper (or butcher paper), marking off incremental lines to show the centuries, enlarging\u00a0the spaces during the periods of time when much was going on. We started with the creation, life of Adam, and moved right into the first civilization: the Sumerians. \u00a0There are many long centuries that not much noteworthy happened, such as during\u00a0the Dark Ages, or time spans that we don&#8217;t have information on, such as civilizations without writing. \u00a0So condense these\u00a0time spaces when you haven&#8217;t got anything to display, and elongate the &#8220;busy&#8221; periods of time when you&#8217;ll have several figures of importance.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lovetolearn.net\/Ancient-Civilizations-Time-Line\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-7064\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/happyhomeschooling.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/2288.jpg?resize=169%2C218&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"2288\" width=\"169\" height=\"218\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/happyhomeschooling.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/2288.jpg?resize=233%2C300&amp;ssl=1 233w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/happyhomeschooling.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/2288.jpg?w=388&amp;ssl=1 388w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 169px) 100vw, 169px\" \/><\/a>My favorite time lines already have the figures drawn so you can either color them or use the included color ones. \u00a0I like to do one time line per year of history study. \u00a0They really do help organize your understanding of history!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7065\" style=\"width: 153px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lovetolearn.net\/Ancient-Civilizations-Time-Line\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7065\" class=\"wp-image-7065\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/happyhomeschooling.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Screen-Shot-2015-05-15-at-10.44.54-PM.png?resize=143%2C249&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2015-05-15 at 10.44.54 PM\" width=\"143\" height=\"249\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/happyhomeschooling.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Screen-Shot-2015-05-15-at-10.44.54-PM.png?resize=172%2C300&amp;ssl=1 172w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/happyhomeschooling.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Screen-Shot-2015-05-15-at-10.44.54-PM.png?w=208&amp;ssl=1 208w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 143px) 100vw, 143px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7065\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Figure from Ancient Civilizations time line.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Start with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lovetolearn.net\/Ancient-Civilizations-Time-Line\" target=\"_blank\">Ancient Civilizations\u00a0Timeline<\/a>. \u00a0This goes along with your history studies, or it can actually be used as an outline for your own study of history using library resources.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lovetolearn.net\/Middle-Ages-Renaissance-and-Reformation-Time-Line\" target=\"_blank\">Middle Ages Timeline<\/a> comes next, and then the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lovetolearn.net\/US-History-Time-Line\" target=\"_blank\">US History Time Line.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you would like to make your own time line, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lovetolearn.net\/US-History-Time-Line\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-7066\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/happyhomeschooling.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/image.png?resize=168%2C222&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"image\" width=\"168\" height=\"222\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/happyhomeschooling.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/image.png?resize=227%2C300&amp;ssl=1 227w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/happyhomeschooling.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/image.png?w=272&amp;ssl=1 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 168px) 100vw, 168px\" \/><\/a>here is a great <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guesthollow.com\/homeschool\/history\/timeline.html\" target=\"_blank\">website that provides free printable timelines<\/a>.\u00a0You can use free clip-art that represents figures for the timeline. \u00a0This is fun, but a lot of work. \u00a0If you have an artist in the family, it might be interesting\u00a0to draw the figures.<\/p>\n<p>I found that having the timeline figures ready to go\u00a0(using the time line resources shown) was very convenient and gave me a ready-made visual to add to the time line as we discussed the period of history. <em>If I had to wait until we created the\u00a0figures ourselves, we <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lovetolearn.net\/US-History-Time-Line\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-7067\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/happyhomeschooling.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Screen-Shot-2015-05-15-at-11.03.36-PM.png?resize=156%2C226&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2015-05-15 at 11.03.36 PM\" width=\"156\" height=\"226\" \/><\/a>never did get around to doing a time line.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Try using\u00a0a time line.
