She came tonight as I sat alone,
\nThe girl I used to be.
\nAnd she gazed at me with her earnest eye
\nAnd questioned reproachfully,<\/p>\n

“Have you forgotten the many plans
\nAnd hopes that I had for you?”
\n“The great career, the splendid fame,
\nAll the wonderful things to do?”<\/p>\n

“Where is the mansion of stately height
\nWith all of its gardens rare?”
\n“The silken robes that I dreamed for you
\nAnd the shining jewels in your hair?”<\/p>\n

And as she spoke, I was very sad
\nFor I wanted her pleased with me . . .
\nThis slender girl from the shadowy past,
\nThe girl that I used to be.<\/p>\n

So gently rising, I took her hand,
\nAnd guided her up the stairs
\nWhere peacefully sleeping, my babies lay
\nSo innocent, sweet, and fair.<\/p>\n

I told her that these are my only gems,
\nAnd precious they are to me;
\nThat silken robe is my motherhood
\nOf costly simplicity.<\/p>\n

And my mansion of stately height is love,
\nAnd the only career I know,
\nIs serving each day in these sheltered walls
\nFor the dear ones who come and go.<\/p>\n

And as I spoke to my shadowy guest,
\nShe smiled through her tears at me;
\nAnd I saw the woman I am now,
\nPleased I’m the girl I used to be.<\/p>\n
