Plus, they lighten many a tired mom&#8217;s load.<\/p>\n<p>What is enough and what is too much to expect from children? Here is an <strong>age appropriate guide-line<\/strong> (keeping in mind that each child has a unique ability level):<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Toddlers<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\nHelp pick up toys with you working side by side<br \/>\nWipe up a spill<br \/>\nDo a small specific task before the timer goes off<br \/>\nWash a spot on a wall or door<br \/>\nPut books back on a shelf<br \/>\nFeed pets<br \/>\nDust (put socks on his hands!)<br \/>\nDrag a light laundry basket or hamper to the laundry room<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">3-5 Years<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\nAll of the above, plus:<br \/>\nDress themselves, to a degree<br \/>\nBrush their own teeth (you will still need to &#8220;check&#8221; those teeth!)<br \/>\nWash themselves<br \/>\nSet the table<br \/>\nMake beds<br \/>\nTake plastic dishes over to counter after a meal<br \/>\nWash dishes (after a manner)<br \/>\nRinse non-breakable and non-heavy dishes<br \/>\nPick up toys, if it is a small confined task and not a whole pile of assorted<br \/>\ntoys dumped on the floor<br \/>\nPut clothes and shoes away<br \/>\nSort things (spoons go here, forks go there)<br \/>\nHelp cook<br \/>\nPut away groceries<br \/>\nFold small items, such as pillowcases and dishtowels<br \/>\nUnwrap things (we buy a case of hand soap at a time and unwrap it to let it<br \/>\nharden so it lasts longer)<br \/>\nMatch socks<br \/>\nEmpty trash cans<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">6 to 8 Years<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\nAll of the above, plus:<br \/>\nTie shoes<br \/>\nHang up clothes on hangers<br \/>\nChange a baby&#8217;s diaper<br \/>\nPeel vegetables<br \/>\nTake care of pets with supervision<br \/>\nTake out trash<br \/>\nSet the table<br \/>\nSort laundry and put it away<br \/>\nLoad dishwasher<br \/>\nWash dishes for real<br \/>\nWeeding<br \/>\nWash walls or mirrors with spray cleaner<br \/>\nAnswer the phone and take messages<br \/>\nGet up with an alarm clock<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">9 to 12 Years<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\nAll of the above, plus<br \/>\nDo their own hair (girls can learn to fix their hair now)<br \/>\nGet themselves all dressed and ready by themselves<br \/>\nSweep<br \/>\nVacuum<br \/>\nMop<br \/>\nFollow a recipe<br \/>\nBake bread<br \/>\nClear the table<br \/>\nDo laundry<br \/>\nChange bedding<br \/>\nIron<br \/>\nScrub the bathtub<br \/>\nMow the lawn<br \/>\nDo yard work<br \/>\nWatch small children<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>13 to 15 Years<\/strong> <\/span><br \/>\nAll the above, plus<br \/>\nGrocery shop<br \/>\nCook a full meal<br \/>\nWash windows<br \/>\nDeep cleaning<br \/>\nWash a car<br \/>\nEarn money and buy own clothes<br \/>\nWatch babies<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">16 Years and Up<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\nAll that an adult can do that does not require experience or mature judgment<\/p>\n<p>Enjoy the help!
