Talent Show!

ammonviolin

The golden hours to be with family. . . time to talk, play games, take walks and . . . to share our talents!

One of our traditions is put on a little talent show for each other in a very fun and informal way. Every time we have a talent show, I feel amazed at how accomplished my children are! (How did that happen?) I realize that I don’t often enough just stop and fully listen to the results of their practicing, practicing. It is so fun to hear my kids play their instruments, sing, recite poetry they have memorized in homeschool, tell a story or do a dance. I think it is so good for them too—a chance to shine and be applauded without the stress of a formal recital!

Precious Body

emily_elizabeth_closeupAren’t babies the greatest? They don’t give a smidgen of care to what you dress them up in. It can be on inside-out and backwards, and they don’t complain. They don’t mind if their hair isn’t combed just so. They aren’t self-conscious if they burp. Tummy gurgling in public doesn’t bother them a bit. They think they are wonderful! And they are right, too.

An Attitude

The usefulness of reading charts and library games has always escaped me. “You get a prize for reading 6 books” sounds about the same to me as getting a prize for every 6 brownies I eat. Who needs motivation? Reading is delicious!

Who God Trusts

Parenting is a big deal!

In the eternal scheme of things, what a parent does, or does not do, is crucial! No, it is more than that: it is life-threatening! Even more—it is civilization-threatening!

Did you realize you had so much power?

Who does God trust? In Genesis 18: 19, God is speaking to Abraham telling him he can trust him to raise his children to honor God, and to live true to the values Abraham holds dear.

“For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the Lord, to do justice and judgment; that the Lord may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him” (which was, that all the nations of the earth would be blessed through his seed).

Why did you decide to homeschool?

More Flies with Honey

flieshoney

“You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar”, my mother used to say.

Grumble, grumble. I wanted to do it the easy way (by force)—not the right way (by persuasion)!

You can chase the animals all over the field trying to catch them, but rattle the feed bowl and they’ll come runnin’! I often think of this when trying to get a child to do a chore, to do their math, or complete some other less desirable task. How do I lace this job with honey? How do I get them to “come running”? That takes some creative thinking on mom’s part to keep homelife happy and pleasant.

Mommy Playing

        The Play’s the Thing

Forgive me, Lord, for all the tasks
That went undone today.
But this morning when my child
Toddled in and said, “Mommy play?”
I simply had to say “yes”.
And between the puzzles, and trucks and
Blocks and dolls and old hats and books
And giggles,
We shared a thousand special thoughts,
A hundred hopes and dreams and hugs.
And tonight, when prayer time came
And he folded his hands and softly whispered
“Thank you, God, for Mommy and Daddy
And for Mommy playing,”
I knew it was a day well wasted.
And I knew you’d understand.

Priscilla Stories

Abigail_teethOne day when Louisa was nearly 3 years old, I told her to shut the door and she answered, “In a minute!”. I wanted her to learn cheerful and prompt obedience. I tried to explain that to her, and I made sure she shut the door, but I wondered if she really understood that “in a minute” isn’t the right response. So, that night when I put her to bed, I made up a little story about a curly haired little girl named Priscilla who said, “in a minute” and what happened to her.
